SELAMA ZONE & LMS DISTRICT ENGLISH CARNIVAL 2012

The 2012 Selama Zone English Carnival will be held on 7 April, 2012 at S.K. Selama. The competitions are open to all primary schools in Selama. The aims of the English Carnival activities are to improve the standard of English, instil the love and interests for learning English in fun ways. These English enrichment activities will give opportunities to pupils to gain confidence and learn to apply the language in a useful manner. It is through this carnival competitions that representatives for the Selama Zone will be selected for the Larut, Matang & Selama District English Carnival which is on 14 April, a week after the Selama Zone English Carnival.

It is hoped that all English teachers involved will give their support and co-operation to ensure success in running this programme. The English Panel of Selama Zone is running this programme under the supervision of Tn Hj Sapuan, the Education Supervisor of the Co-curriculum Academic Unit of the LMS Education Office .

Madam Oon Lay Wah has been appointed as the co-ordinator of the English Activities for primary schools in the LMS District this year.

The events to be held for the English Carnivals both at zone and district level are : 1. Story- Telling ( Level 2 ) 2. Public Speaking( Level 2 ) 3. Action Song ( Year 3 pupils ) 4. Choral Speaking ( Level 2 )- at district level only * There will be no competition for Choral Speaking as it is unanimously agreed that S.K. Selama will represent the Selama Zone this year.

29 March, 2012 is the dateline for schools in Selama to send in their participation forms and also hand in their contribution either by cash or cheque.

2 April, the English Panel of Selama Zone will be conducting its first meeting at the Meeting Room in SK Selama. All the heads of the working committees are invited to gather to discuss urgent matters.

Thank You, Pn Adlin Deniel

Pn Adlin Bt Deniel has been teaching English in our school for a number of years although she is not an English optionist. As , another Year 4 class had been opened, Encik Md Akram Zaki will be teaching English in Year 4 Bestari and Pn Adlin's former class which is Year 2 Cerdas. Pn Adlin instead will be teaching Bahasa Melayu to Year 4 Bestari.

The English teachers especially would like to express their thanks and gratitude to Pn Adlin for her contribution and support given to the English Panel. Her help,guidance and experience will still be needed by the school and its pupils.

Pn Adlin has just started on furthering her studies in TESOL at USM and we wish her all the best in her studies. Hopefully, she will be able to teach English again in future.

ENGLISH CAMPAIGN 2012

SK Selama will launch its English Campaign 2012 during the Monday Weekly Assembly at 7.30 am on 26 March, 2012. The English Campaign is actually a whole year long campaign. However , March, April and May are the months the campaign is focused. The launching will be a simple ceremony which starts of with the prayers being read in English followed by the speech from the English Panel Head, Madam Oon Lay Wah and the official opening and launching speech of this campaign.The SK Selama Choral Speaking Team will make their first presentation to all to give them confidence and gain moral support from teachers and pupils.

At present, the English teachers are busy preparing for the coming Selama Zone English Carnival which will be held in SK Selama on Saturday, 7 April, 2012. SK Selama will be participating in all the 4 events; Story-Telling Competition( Level 2 ),Public Speaking Competition ( Level 2 ) , Action Song Competition ( Yr 3 pupils ) and Choral Speaking Competition (Level 2 - Yr 6 Gemilang pupils ). At the same time , 3 pupils are selected to represent the school in the Spelling Knowledge Discovery Competition which will be held in May.

For the school level competitions, the following events will be held:

Other Activities For English Teachers:

1. Paint and decorate the English Garden - murals on the walls, creative mobiles and wall charts. 2. Decorate and arrange materials neatly in the English Room.

Preparation of additional Teaching Aids and English materials- Choral Reading Cards in Baskets, story books in sets for each classroom, Story cards, Song & Poem cards, UPSR Format modules etc.

These contests will be held after recess or during the English periods. English teachers will fix the schedule soon. Pupils are encouraged to participate in the ativities planned for them.

In this way they can improve their English, gain confidence and get the opportunity to apply the language in a fun way.

The theme for the English Campaign 2012 is,"Have Fun Learning & Speaking Good English".

WELCOME TO SK SELAMA

Welcome to our school and we hope En Akram will enjoy teaching here. We extend our warmest welcome to En Akram Zaki , our new English teacher. He has just been transferred here from S.J.K. ( T ) Selama, Perak. As the enrollment of Year 4 is too large, the LMS Education Department has given permission for our school to open up a new class, Year 4 Bestari. Thus, En Akram Zaki will be teaching English to the pupils in this class. For the first time in years, SK Selama has two male English teachers. May the English Panel of SK Selama achieve success and bring progress to the school and its pupils.

Welcome and happy greetings too to our new Senior Assistant of Curricular Activities, Pn Rohana Bte Abdullah. She from SK Bukit Jana, Kamunting has just been promoted to this post . Congratulations to Pn Rohana. With her leading the Co-curriculum Unit, it is hoped that her guidance and leadership will lead us to success especially in all the English activities SK Selama is involved in. This year, SK Selama will play host to the Selama Zone English Carnival and also the LMS District Level Knowledge Discovery Spelling Competition held separately. All Year 3 - 6 members of the English Society are reminded to attend all the meetings on Wednesdays as scheduled.

WHAT SHOULD PUPILS DO EVERY DAY TO IMPROVE THEIR ENGLISH ?

My dear pupils ,

I hope you will remember this advice and follow this guideline to become better pupils.
Starting from morning till night before you go to bed, I hope you do follow these tips.

1.  Start fresh each day.  Be ready to listen to your teachers and try to understand what is being taught.

2.  Pay attention and take notes.  Ask any questions if you don't understand.

3.  When at home, do all your homework first.  Then, revise the lessons you have learned in school
     on that day or before.

4.  Study the notes given by your teacher.  Rewrite the sample or model compositions a few times.
     Try to be creative and add in your own words to make your sentences more interesting.

5.  Speak English often and do not be shy.

6.  Reading improves your English so read a lot of English books.

The First SK Selama English Panel Meeting of 2012

The English Panel held its first meeting on Thurs. 19 Jan. 2012 in the Digital Laboratory. Madam Oon Lay Wah, the English Panel Head welcomed all the 7 English teachers to the meeting and especially to Encik Awang Mansor, our new English teacher. Our headmistress, Pn Hjh Ashah Bt Hj Arshad could not attend this meeting because she had an urgent matter to attend to. Madam Oon expressed her thanks and appreciation to all the teachers for helping to bring successes to the teaching of English and the achievement in the English activities especially in the English Carnival Competitions at the zone and district level. Without excellent teamwork, each success could not be achieved. Puan Hjh Norhaizan, our Senior Assistant of Administration delivered a brief speech representing the headmistress. She too thanked all the English teachers for their effort and dedication in teaching the pupils and helping to bring success to the school teams especially in the Action Song and Choral Speaking Competitions last year. She hopes the cooperation and commitment would be continued this year and our school will excel in the UPSR as well as the co-academic activities to the highest level. Matters discussed during the meeting were as the following: 1. The 2011 UPSR English result - Good . Total no. of candidates: 107 Total passes for English : 86 ( 80.4%) No. of As : 24 ( 22.4% ) 2. Good Luck & Farewell To Pn Suzana ( New Time Table Next Week ))

Hello, dear teachers and pupils, Hope all are fine and have a nice weekend. The first week of school is over. The new time-tables were distributed and now all will be receiving the latest time tables with some changes made. This is due to the transfer of Pn Suzana Sulaiman to SK Bukit Bertam as the new Senior Assistant of Co-curricular Activities there. We wish to congratulate her on her promotion and thank her for all her contributions to this school and its pupils. Hope it's a great and successful year.
